Hi, I'm Mikayla.
I am a registered and licensed occupational therapist with a passion for pediatrics, and I am really glad you are here!
I have over six years experience working with kids ranging from 1 to 19 years with
various diagnoses including autism, ADHD, sensory integration, fine and gross motor delays, and behavioral concerns.
My journey started as a registered behavioral technician at a school for kids with autism. It is there I found my passion for working with the autism community and those with special needs. After graduate school, I have worked in both a pediatric outpatient clinic and school setting.
I like to focus my occupational therapy sessions on meaningful skills for both kids (and their parents) while using current evidence-based research and a naturalistic approach. This means I use strategies that are proven to work with the child’s interests to make therapy engaging and motivating for them. I believe therapy is a perfect blend of fun and challenging to help encourage growth.
In my free time, I enjoy all things outdoors including running and mountain biking with my husband. When I am not outside, I can often be found eating at a new restaurant or cooking up a new recipe in my kitchen. My love for the outdoors fuels my drive to be mindful of my environmental impact. You can often find me at garage sales or thrift stores looking for secondhand treasures.
Please reach us at mikayla.pillar@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Occupational therapy focuses on aiding and improving independence for an individual in their daily life tasks. These tasks are the “occupations” they engage in on any given day. It may include getting dressed, preparing a meal, completing household chores, or engaging in a hobby. When impairments, illness, or difficulties prevent an individual in completing their daily tasks, occupational therapy can help.
No matter the age, everyone has occupations they engage in throughout the day. Pediatric
occupational therapy will focus on the occupations of children and what is appropriate for their age. This can include dressing, feeding, personal hygiene, sustained attention, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, social skills, and play.
If you have noticed your child has fallen behind on hitting developmental milestones or is experiencing difficulties completing daily tasks, they may benefit from seeing an occupational therapist. Some children may already have an official diagnosis and may be referred for occupational services by their primary pediatrician. However, an official diagnosis is not required to be evaluated. If you have any concerns regarding your child, please feel free to call for a free consultation.
